For 70 years the Rügendamm has connected Germany's largest island with the Hanseatic city of Stralsund and the mainland. The plans for this technical masterpiece go back to the beginning of the 19th century. To date, this is combined railroad. and road link consisting of the Ziegelgrabenbrücke, the island of Dänholm, the Strelasund Bridge and the dam, not only an important link between the European mainland and Scandinavia, but it also bears until the completion of the new Rügen Bridge 2007, the burden for supplying Rügen and the holiday traffic ,
Wulf Krentien has been dealing with the history of traffic on the island of Rügen for more than 25 years. In this illustrated book, with more than 200 largely unpublished pictures, maps and drawings, he shows the development of the Rügendamm from the traditional ferry connections through initial ideas and construction to its opening in 1936. It also documents the partial destruction of the building and the last reconstructions in 1990 and 1992.
This illustrated book will fascinate fans of technology as well as all the locals, whose daily life makes the bridges over the Strelasund no longer bearable.
