    • The Inauguration Chronicles (328 AD): Historical documents prove that Emperor Constantine the Great personally inaugurated the bridge on July 5, 328 AD. He traveled to the Danube Limes specifically for this occasion.

    • Military Records of the Destruction (c. 367 AD): Roman sources and later historical analyses (including accounts of the Gothic Wars by Emperor Valens) indicate that the bridge was only intact for about 40 years. It was presumably destroyed or abandoned around the year 367 AD. The reason for the extremely short lifespan of the massive structure is still being investigated today.

    • Geographical Context: In ancient geography, the bridge connected the metropolis Colonia Ulpia Oescus (near present-day Gigen, Bulgaria) with the Roman fort Sucidava (near present-day Corabia/Celei in Romania). With a total length of 2,400 meters, it was the longest river bridge in the ancient world.
