When Margaret of Tyrol-Görz (1318-1369) married Louis I of Bavaria-Brandenburg in 1342, Kufstein became part of Tyrol for the first time in history. This marriage was met with great approval throughout the land, even though Pope Clement VI refused to recognize it and therefore imposed an interdict on Tyrol. Margaret and Louis were excommunicated by the Pope. Undeterred, they remained true to each other and ruled Tyrol together for another nineteen years.
